After the spectacular triumph at the Asia Cup 2022, India will play Australia in a three-match ODI series at home in what will be some solid preparation before the 2023 ODI World Cup. In a press conference, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and captain Rohit Sharma have announced the India squad for the series. In the first two ODIs, senior players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya have been rested. KL Rahul will lead the side for the first two ODIs, while Ravindra Jadeja will serve as his deputy. All the three players will return in the squad for the 3rd ODI.

Ajit Agarkar said that the players have been given a breather after having played the Asia Cup, and with the World Cup coming. He said that players sometimes need mental breaks to going into big tournaments like the World Cup.

“Few of the players have been given a breather. Rohit has taken a break.”Luckily we got a fair amount of cricket at the Asia Cup,” Agarkar said.

“If not, we would’ve looked at it some other way. More than physical, sometimes guys need a mental break, which isn’t a bad thing leading into a tournament like the World Cup,” he added.

“For the third game, everyone will be available. We will play our World Cup squad. This [squad for the first two ODIs] gives us a chance to give guys sitting outside a chance. It’s still a strong squad. Like I said, if we hadn’t got a lot of cricket at the Asia Cup, who knows, we may have thought differently,” Agarkar further went on to say.
