The SUV segment currently commands the highest share in the passenger vehicle (PV) market at nearly 43%. The availability of some formidable models has definitely aided the growth. With original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) commencing 2023 on an overall positive note, the SUVs, in particular, garnered handsome volumes in January. The Tata Nexon, Hyundai Creta, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Tata Punch, Hyundai Venue, Kia Seltos, Kia Sonet, Mahindra Scorpio (including N and Classic), Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Mahindra Bolero were the top 10 best-selling SUVs in India in January 2023.

There seems to be no halt to the Tata Nexon’s ascendancy with the compact SUV sitting at the top of the SUV chart yet again with volumes of 15,567 units in January. During the same month, the Hyundai Creta clocked its best-ever monthly volumes, since its launch in India way back in 2015, at 15,037 units. Not far behind was Maruti Suzuki India’s SUV mainstay, the Brezza, at 14,359 units.

The second SUV volume driver for Tata Motors, the Punch, posted sales of 12,006 units in January. It was followed by the Hyundai Venue at 10,738 units. Kia India’s most popular SUV, the Seltos, was in sixth position with sales of 10,470 units during the month. The Kia Sonet, which rivals the Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Brezza and Hyundai Venue, clocked sales of 9,261 units.

The popularity of the Mahindra Scorpio (including N and Classic) keeps growing with the brand garnering sales of 8,715 units in January. The recently-launched Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, which takes on the Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos, recorded sales of 8,662 units. Making the list of the top 10 best-selling SUVs in India in January 2023 was the legendary Mahindra Bolero with sales of 8,574 units.
