India continued their incredible dominance in bilateral cricket as they completed two back-to-back whitewashes in ODI cricket to begin 2023 by beating both Sri Lanka and New Zealand on home soil. By virtue of their perfect start to the year, India climbed to the number one spot in the ICC Men’s ODI rankings.

India are now the world’s numero uno team in both white-ball formats having already secured the top spot in the T20I rankings. While India have dominated bilateral cricket for a long time, these feats have come with criticism of India’s poor show in ICC events in recent times.

The Men in Blue have not lifted a global title for almost 10 years now having last won a trophy in 2013 when they were crowned winners of the 2013 Champions Trophy under MS Dhoni’s captaincy. This has put a big shadow on India’s dominance of world cricket as fans await the team to lift the world title after repeated heartbreaks on the biggest stage.

However, ex-Pakistan wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal has come out in strong defense of the Men in Blue and referred to South Africa and New Zealand’s poor records in world events historically. Kamran stated that winning an ICC trophy can not be the only criterion to judge a team.

“People talk about India having not won an ICC event for 10 years. You can’t win every ICC event. And if winning an ICC trophy is the only criterion then teams like New Zealand and South Africa should be banned since they haven’t won any. So this is just a pick. India is a great team and is playing at a different level,” said Akmal on

India will look to break the drought on home soil in the 2023 ODI World Cup which will take place in October-November this year.
