New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today congratulated the Under-19 Indian Women Cricket Team for winning the inaugural edition of the Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup by beating England in the final at the Senwes Park in Potchefstroom.

While lauding the young players, PM Modi said that they have played excellent cricket and added that their success will inspire several upcoming cricketers.

The Shafali Verma-led India U-19 squad first bundled out England for 68 in 17.1 overs and then returned to knock off the target in 14 overs to secure the historic win. The team put on a comprehensive display in the final to beat England by a huge margin of 7 wickets.

India won the toss and chose to bowl first. As the bowlers put on a flawless display against a helpless English batting unit, England managed just 68 and were sent back to pavillion without even playing the complete 20 overs.

As the Indians side returned on the field to chase the target, the situation was tense for a while as openers Shafali Verma and Shweta Sehrawat were dismissed early. A solid partnership by Soumya Tiwari and Gongadi Trisha put the Women in Blue back on track as they completed the win with six overs to spare.

This is the first-ever ICC title won by an Indian women’s team. The senior side had previously lost the final of the 2005 and 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup and also tasted defeat in the 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup summit clash against Australia.

Wishes pour in

After the historic win BCCI Secretary Jay Shah announced Rs 5 crore prize money for Women’s U19 cricket team and support staff.

“Women’s Cricket in India is on the upswing and the World Cup triumph has taken the stature of women’s cricket several notches higher. I am delighted to announce INR 5 crore for the entire team and support staff as prize money. This is surely a path-breaking year,” Jay Shah tweeted.

Congratulatory messages poured in for the Women In Blue after they lifted the World Cup trophy. Virat Kohli tweeted, “U-19 World Cup Champions! What a special moment! Congratulations girls on your triumph.”

VVS Laxman tweeted, “Fantastic display by Shafali and her team to lift the inaugural Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup! Many congratulations to the players and the support staff for a fabulous campaign. Ahead of the WPL, a huge shot in the arm for women’s cricket in India.”
